My company has a 401(k) plan. What's that?
In general, it's a "defined contribution" plan that lets employees contribute a portion of their pay into their retirement account. In many 401(k) plans, employers match a portion of the employee's contribution, frequently up to a set percentage. The term "401(k)" simply refers to the section of the Internal Revenue Code where the rules governing this type of plan can be found.
