Two weeks after I started my job, my employer required me to sign a non-competition agreement. I would like to leave my job and work for a competitor in the area. Can my employer prevent me from doing that?

Under Pennsylvania law, non-competition agreements and employment contracts are only enforceable if they are signed at the start of employment or when the employee’s job duties significantly expand. Therefore, a non-competition agreement signed two weeks after the start of employment would not be enforced under Pennsylvania in order to avoid the non-competition agreement your employer. It would be prudent to consult a lawyer to ensure that you know whether or not the action you are apt to take does violate the law.
