I am the father of a newborn and want to take time off to be with him during his infancy. Can I do this without getting penalized by my employer? My wife was able to stay home under her employer's "maternity leave" policy.

The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) requires employers with 50 or more employees to allow fathers to take up to twelve work weeks of unpaid leave following the birth or adoption of a child without penalty. Additionally, a state counterpart to the FMLA or an individual company policy may expand these benefits. You should check with your local Department of Labor to find out the details.
